Patterned after the comic novel Tokaidochu Hizakurige (Shank’s Mare) by Jippensha Ikku, this work depicts the protagonists, Yajiro and Kitahachi, and the city of Kawasaki as seen in the novel about their travels to the stations along the Tokaido road. The bottom half of the work portrays Yaji and Kita looking back on some foreign women. The top half of the work depicts the Seien Sambo salon at which literary men enjoy calligraphy with two potted plants nearby.
