A large portion of this juniper bonsai’s sharply twisting trunk has become shari, dead whitewood. From this white wood, it gives off a powerful impression of breaking waves towards the viewer. This piece is titled “Hokusai” due to its likeness to the ukiyo-e woodblock print, “36 Views of Mount Fuji”, by famed Edo period (1603~1868) ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. The harsh shari form retains the memories of the high mountain that this tree grew on.
