The straight trunk, which rises up with numerous layers of foliage twisting around it, gives this tree the look of an archetypical chokkan style, or formal upright style, bonsai. The hinoki cypress, or Tsuyama-hinoki, was first discovered in the Tsuyama Mountains in Okayama Prefecture. It is a popular species due to how its short, dark green foliage is ideal for being made into a bonsai.
