With needles growing only at the apex of the rising trunk and on the lower branches, the thick, twisted trunk is bare for the viewer to see. This tree is well suited to its title, Kagayaki, which means "brilliance" or "radiance". Having lived many years, the trunk swells up from its base to show off white shari (dead whitewood).
