This Japanese maple boasts an elegant, white trunk that draws gentle curves as it rises from its rock-like roots, known as bankon. This variety of Japanese maple is called shishigashira, which is derived from how the leaves are curled and twisted like the mane of a shishi, or, Chinese guardian lion.
