The Japanese name for the yew tree is ichii, meaning the first place, a name given because the tree was used in the making of sceptres held by high ranking people. This bonsai has accumulated a great number of years as seen in the trunk, which has partly died and become shari, dead whitewood, giving the tree an air of dignity. At the lower left of the trunk a branch has died entirely turning into jin, dead white branches, which further show the hardships this tree has faced.
