The Japanese name of Kamatsuka, Pourthiaea villosa var. laevis, which literally means scythe handle, comes from its use in making the tool. This is made possible because of the toughness of the wood. It is also known by the name Ushikoroshi, or cow-killer, because it is said that the wood of this tree was also used in making nose rings for cattle. The full trunk leans the left into the tips of the branches. In May clusters of small white flowers can be seen which later give way to refreshing crimson fruit in the fall.
