Cochin (Kōchi in Japanese) refers to the northern region of present-day Vietnam. In Japan, colorful glazed ceramics originating from southern China and brought by ships from Cochin came to be known as Kōchi ware. This piece is coated with a milky white glaze. Its shape, resembling a flower with open petals, is called mokkō. Additionally, humorous lion-face decorations, featuring curled hair designs, adorn both sides of the body.
