Pottery from southern areas of China came to be called Kochi-yaki. This is because ships bearing these departed from Kochi, a Chinese outpost in modern Vietnam, during the Quing Dynasty. This particular piece was fired with a milk white glaze and shaped in the Mokko-kei style, a name that calls attention to the trunk shape resembling the opening petals of the quince flower. Another feature of this pot is the humorous lion’s faces that decorate the side of the pot.
