Cochin (Kōchi in Japanese) refers to the northern region of present-day Vietnam. In Japan, colorful glazed ceramics originating from southern China and brought by ships from Cochin came to be known as Kōchi ware. This piece is a pot coated with a milky white glaze, and is called a lotus-shaped pot due to its form. The body of the pot is round and bulges out, displaying a soft, curved beauty. It is certified as a “Kichō Bonki,” or a bonsai pot of culture importance by the Nippon Bonsai Association.
