Furuya Junpei Shōten, a Chinese general store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, sold pots ordered from Yixing with the stamp “Shōkodō-sei” (made by Shōkodō) and they were very popular. The shape of this piece, with its four corners curving inward from the outward-curving rim and two swirls on the cloud-shaped feet, is well known as a Shōkodō brand basin. The deep, glossy finish enhances the elegant shape of this piece.
