Due to the low iron content in the clay, this piece turned slightly yellowish white when fired, hence the name “hakudei” (white clay) pottery. The front of the body of this piece is decorated with red camellias, white plum blossoms, and what appears to be a black bird, probably a Chinese starling, all painted in colored clay. The back is engraved with a Chinese poem from the Tang dynasty.
