This type of pot is known as a seki-dai. Seki-dai, as seen in picture scrolls from the Japanese Kamakura period (1185–1333), were originally wooden bowls with handles on their four sides to make carrying easier. Ceramics with this design began to be produced in the 19th century. A deep cobalt blue glazing has been applied all over the surfaces of this piece. The inside of the window has been left unglazed to allow for the blue and white pomegranate and butterfly design to be drawn there.
