This wooden pot with reliefs on all four sides is an archetypal planter for bonsai trees, and even appears in Kamakura-period (1185 AD-1333 AD) picture scrolls. This style started to be imitated and recreated during the Edo period (1603 AD-1868 AD). Using appliqué, auspicious motifs—Chinese lions and peonies—are rendered in three dimensions.
