The blue, green, and yellow overglaze enamels on a white background are characteristic of Kutani ware from Ishikawa Prefecture. On each face of the hexagonal body of this piece, believed to have been produced during the Meiji period, designs of pine, bamboo, and plum tree (shōchikubai in Japanese, an auspicious grouping) alternate with a pattern called Narihira latticework on a yellow background. Narihira latticework is a motif originating from the Heian-period poet Ariwara no Narihira.
