Satsuma-yaki ware has a history of over 400 years of pottery making in Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture in the south of Japan). This pair of pots features a sparrow flying in the midst of autumn grasses and a cock surrounded by “shi-kunshi” (bamboo, Japanese apricot, chrysanthemum, and orchid), a subject of oriental painting, in rich colors. This is a gorgeous work called “Kinrande,” in which gold is added to colored paintings.
