This small pot displays the refined form characteristic of Heian Kōzan (1905–1990), a Japanese bonki (bonsai pot) ware artist often mentioned alongside Heian Tōfukuji. This piece features a design of a lion playing with a peony, rendered using a stamping technique on the front of the body, over which a thick cobalt blue glaze is applied. This motif is considered one of Kōzan’s signature designs, also appearing on pieces fired with jun-style glaze or yellow glaze.
