The straight, thin edge of this shudei tray exhibits the sharp technique utilized by Kozan, whose nickname was “razor.” The glaze was used to coat the inside of the tray only. It has an emerald green color which creates a brilliant contrast with the shudei base.
Heian Kozan (Real Name: Koike Kazuo) 1905-1990
Kozan was born in Seto, Gifu Prefecture. He was trained by his father who was a potter. He then moved to Kyoto and began making bonsai pots. His pots have no curves or distortion, and he earned the nickname “Razor Kozan.” He gave this name to his son in 1973 and changed his own name to “Kouou.”
