This square pot features a traditional ornamental plant, the wind orchid (fūran), on its body. Also known as the “wealth orchid” (fūkiran), the wind orchid was widely cultivated as an ornamental plant from around the Genroku period (1688–1704 AD). The pot’s relief carving vividly depicts the wind orchid’s characteristic features: its thick, fleshy leaves and its uniquely thick, cord-like roots.
