Rusu, or Luzhu (coming from Luzon, now the largest island in the Philippines), refers to a type of pottery produced in Seto, Japan, during the late Edo period (1603-1868). These pots have a bright green glaze. A wide variety of daily utensils were produced in this style, and as such, they are also depicted in ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo period. The next item on display, a painting by Kitagawa Utamaro, depicts a blue-glazed bowl with a similar shape and cloud-and-dragon design. However, in a version of this print owned by the British Museum that is closer to the original painting, the glazing of the pot is shown as being green like this pot.
