One can see the image of a twisting pine trunk in the patterns on the crystals that peak out of its black surface. When viewing this stone, one could almost hear the singing of a crane nesting on a pine tree. As such, it was given the name Rōshoku Kakusei, meaning "Old Pine and Singing Crane". Stones such as these with patterns on their surface are called monyō-seki, meaning "patterned stones".
