This painting portrays Bishamonten (also known as Varisravana), one of the seven lucky gods, as a beautiful woman. A pagoda, which the god traditionally carries in his hand, is painted on the woman’s kimono. The woven pattern in the kimono and on the flowerpot containing a gourd is known as the Bishamon kikko, an auspicious pattern that is used as the pattern on the deity’s armor. The prop for the gourd is in the shape of a trident, a weapon Bishamonten is depicted as holding in his left hand.
