A Noh play called Hachi no ki (Potted Plants) was adapted into kabuki plays and joruri dramas during the Edo Period. Among these plays, there are ones called Onna Hachi no ki (Female Version of the “Potted Plants” Story) in which Tsuneyo Sano, the leading character of the original, was replaced by his wife Shirotae. This painting portrays one scene from the female version of the play. It shows Shirotae chopping trees for firewood.
