Hauta are short accompaniments to shamisen (a Japanese three-stringed instrument) tunes that became popular in the latter half of the Edo period. Lyrics to the song are written on the top half of the picture, while a woman with long sleeves is depicted on the bottom half. She is holding the seven herbs of spring in a bamboo basket.
