This uke-e piece depicts several anthropomorphized objects which all begin with the sound “fu”. On the top right of the piece, Fukurokuju, one of the “Seven Lucky Gods” in Japanese folklore, is shown holding multiple pieces of rope together. With these pieces of rope, most of the anthropomorphized objects are playing a game of lottery. There is a lot to enjoy in the composition of this piece, such as the confederate rose (fuyō) depicted as a townsperson to the bottom left, or the pheasants’ eye (fukujusō) depicted as a person wearing a Japanese gown who is not playing but is instead sitting to the side as an auditor.
