Joreishiki were meetings of women where they would learn various cultural arts and learn etiquette that was deemed suitable for women. This picture depicts a joreishiki where the main focus is playing music. Four women are playing different musical instruments. From right to left, they are playing a shamisen lute, a xylophone, a yueqin lute, and a koto. A young girl is watching them while holding a traditionally bound Japanese book. In the center of the tatami room is a pine and Japanese sweet flag rock grown style bonsai. On the right is a peony planted in a usubata (thin rim) vase.
