This is the 42nd painting in a series that portrays the lives of women at this time. These paintings depicted these women’s lives in fifty-four paintings, each titled after the chapter names in the famous novel, the Tale of Genji. This painting portrays a woman who is combing another woman’s hair while resting in a zashiki tatami mat room that is facing a garden. A potted Japanese iris is placed across from them on the other side.
