This is painting based on the Kyosai Hyakuzu, a series which pictorialized one hundred Japanese proverbs. It portrays “Kareki ni Hana” (Flowers on a Dead Tree) and “Inu no Kawabata” (Dog Strolling along the Riverbank). The proverb of “Flowers on a Dead Tree” signifies the revival of something which has almost died. A doctor and nurse who came to see a sick patient who is lying behind the screen in the top left corner are amazed to see that a plum tree which they previously thought had died now has red flowers.
