This is a picture of a gardener’s shop in the Dangozaka area of Yanaka, presently the Bunkyo Ward of Tokyo. You can see an example of the Asahi-no-de variety of chrysanthemum growing in a pot. In the background, a chrysanthemum doll can be seen. During the period, it was popular to create such life-sized figures using chrysanthemums. Dangozaka was the center of this fad during the Meiji period (1888~). The Asahi-no-de variety of chrysanthemum was popularly grown and sold during the Edo period.
