There is a type of ukiyo-e woodblock print known as an omocha-e, literally meaning “toy picture.” There are a number of these omacha-e known as mono-zukushi-e, meaning “enumeration picture”, where several different items under a singular theme are depicted together. One of the motifs of the mono-zukushi-e was potted plants.
For this piece, in addition to the mono-zukushi-e composition, human figures are arranged at the bottom of the picture. While the gardener named Den is watching while smoking a pipe, three women are looking for a plant to buy. These three women are named Omichi-san, who is holding a Western-style umbrella, Ohama-san on her left, and Otsuya-san, who is bent down.
