This is a Genji-e based on an illustration in volume 21 of Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji (which itself is based on chapter 12 of the Tale of Genji). It depicts Mitsūji being handed over to the daughter of a powerful person in Akashi city, which is where Mitsūji escaped to after he fled the capital. While this scene took place in the early autumn in the novel, the cherry trees in the garden are in full bloom like it is spring. By the water well there is a pine tree within a vivid azure blue pot. This conipher tree is in what is known as neagari, or exposed-root style. One can also see what appears to be sweet flag planted inside of a blue and white porcelain plant pot with a seigaiha wave pattern.
